And yes, you have to go to Mass TWICE on Christmas weekend!
It's a big question and I'm here to answer it, in case you missed the answer already:There is no "two-for-one" Mass this year on Christmas weekend. As Christmas is on a Monday, many people are confused about their Mass obligation; I have even heard seminarians (who would presumably be more "in the know" than "Joe Bag O'Donuts") assert the wrong thing.Do you have to go to Mass twice that weekend?! Yes.The answer from the bishops is that when there are two consecutive days of obligation (such as Sunday and Christmas this year), each obligation must be fulfilled with a separate Mass. This means that the faithful should attend two separate Masses in order to fulfill both their Sunday and Christmas obligations. In order to fulfill this obligation, it IS possible to attend Mass twice on Sunday, December 24. In fact, it's acceptable (obligation-wise) that one of the Masses is not even the Mass for the 4th Sunday in Advent. In other words, a Vigil Mass for Christmas, and then Midnight Mass would, technically fulfill your obligation. Most parishes are adjusting their Sunday Mass schedules, due to the difficult logistics this year, particularly if you consider the need to transition from Advent to Christmas decorations, for example. Please check with your pastor if you have questions about your ability to fulfill your obligation this Christmas. And please be sure to check your parish's Mass schedule, which is probably not the usual Sunday Mass times this year!
