Are you envious because I am generous? ~reflex on Matt. 20:1-16
Has someone ever taken credit for something you did? Or maybe they complained (to you or to others) about something that you did with the intention of helping them? Kids do this all the time to parents. We do it to God too. He is always giving good things but we are focused on the wrong things, so we complain (to God and to others) that we are not receiving what we need or want.
Sometimes we believe we have not received what we rightly deserved. Often, our sincere efforts are not recognized, acknowledged, or properly praised. And our human sense of justice bristles at this, demanding equity and fairness and receiving what we are “due.” But God’s justice is on another level entirely. God’s justice is inseparable from His Love and His Mercy. What is just in God’s eyes is whatever each person needs to be safe in the Arms of Love forever. God is always giving more than we know how to receive, more than makes sense to our sense of fairness, more than we ourselves would give. And it’s easy to celebrate this when we are the recipient; but when the person who rubs us the wrong way or someone who seems “undeserving” is blessed with God’s abundance, we sometimes complain and feel like we’ve been “cheated” somehow.
But in truth, none of us have been short-changed in any way. Because absolutely everything is a gift from our Father: our life, our breath, our sustenance, the goodness and beauty that surround us, the gift of salvation through the forgiveness of our sins, the hope that keeps us moving forward, and all the hidden gifts that we have not yet recognized. We too often take these gifts for granted, like children who fail to see the work of those who love and sustain them, but they are gifts nonetheless.
And the greatest gift is grace. “You were dead in your transgressions and sins,” St. Paul tells us, but God, “who is rich in mercy” has “brought us to life in Christ…to show the immeasurable riches of his grace” (Eph 2:1-7). God’s justice is His mercy. Whatever we have is a gift of Love. God gives us everything. So why don’t we all receive the exact same things? Because He has made us all different, to reflect in our own unique way the beauty, truth, and goodness of our Source. When we open ourselves fully to Him, we walk steadily and joyfully along the path of becoming the persons He created us to be.
What peace we would know if we rejoiced in ALL of God’s gifts, and not only the ones He gives to us! If our eyes looked for God’s generous hand everywhere, we would walk in gratitude and praise for all He has done and all He is doing, in us and for us, and everywhere else. It would be the beginning of the reign of His Kingdom in us, right here, right now.
